Phoenix Reign Lonebear; Taa’évena’hané’e (Killsnight Woman) born on June 16th 2016 to Larissa Killsnight and Don Lonebear Jr. was called home by Maheo the Creator on the morning of August 20th 2016. She was with us for just a short time but she had made a big impact on every body that had met her. We don’t know why things like this tend to happen but as Cheyenne people we believe there is a reason behind every doing. Our baby girl is home with her family who had gone before her now and she will continue to watch over us until our time comes to join her. Even though she was only 2 months old she acted as if she was much older. No words can explain the pain we carry in our hearts but we know she’d want us to continue on and make a better life for her and her siblings. She is survived by her parents, siblings; LeJo Henry, Memphis, Aiyana, and Travis Jr. Grandparents; Don Allen Lonebear Sr (Roberta), Lavon Firecrow, Stella Ashley, Roberta Ashley, Rosanne Headswift (Wayne), Troy Harris (Jonita) , Viola Biglefthand (Ron Yazzie), Melanie and Dexter Poitra Sr., Alvin Biglefthand, Dustin and Milan Goudreaux, Del Harris (Tina LittleOldMan), Gwen Talawyma, Anthony (Leslie) and Christopher Killsnight. Timothy William Red Bird Beloved son, father, husband, grandfather, and great grandfather will be greatly missed by family, relatives, and friends. We greatly mourn his passing but rejoice with him in that he is in eternal peace and joy with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Tim loved life, he loved hunting, fishing with his boys and grandchildren, and spending time outside enjoying God’s creation. Tim loved to travel, visiting family and friends all across this country. Tim loved to get up early in the morning and it was his traditional practice to greet the morning sun and thank the creator for the new day. After retirement, his favorite pastime was playing bingo. He loved being around people and would sit and talk for hours with anyone who came by. Tim had a friendly handshake and smile for people of all color. To all who knew Tim, we will miss you, we will miss your humor, we will miss your smile, and especially your honesty. It has been a privilege and honor to have known you. Né-á’eše.

Our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend, Fern Shoulderblade, Áméóhné’e (Walks Along Woman), was called home to heaven by Ma’heo’e to be with Him and all of her relatives on June 4, 2016. Under hospice care in her house at Lame Deer, she journeyed peacefully and was surrounded by all of her children and loved ones. Born on February 23, 1928 in Lame Deer, MT, Fern lived a long, fulfilling life of 88 years. An elder of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, she was cherished by her family, friends and loved ones. She was always active in any kind of family or community doings. As matriarch of the Shoulderblade family, she loved her family unconditionally and could always be counted on to be there for special family events. She enjoyed playing handgame, cards, bingo, machines and attending basketball games to cheer on her grandkids. Before being hospitalized, her last wish was to go to the handgame and watch her family play. Born and raised in a different era, she came from the “old days” when life was slower paced and things were different. She would often reminisce about those days and recalled the names and stories of many of her relatives. Fern had a quiet strength and showed her love through her ready smile, hugs and laughter. She always put herself second with her family, choosing to eat last at meals and making sure everyone was comfortable and full. A strong, independent woman, she was the rock of our family and a comfort when in time of need. She was a loving and friendly person by nature and was “grandma” to everyone. She welcomed her home to many and left a lasting impression of hospitality, generosity and love to many. Fern worked for the Northern Cheyenne Headstart Program as a cook for 29 years and retired in 1997. She enjoyed cooking and being around all of the many headstart kids who affectionately called her “kee’eeh”. After retirement, she returned back to the workforce under the AARP program and cooked part time for 4 more years. We will all miss her dearly; Heaven truly gained an angel to watch down upon us. It’s difficult to let her go, but the many memories, good times and legacy of genuine love will live on in each and every one of us touched by her gentle soul. The void left in our lives and hearts is heavy, however we find solace knowing you’re in a good place, free of pain or suffering and your great love and the wonderful memories we had with you will live on in all of us. We know you are rejoicing in heaven. Fern was preceded in death by her parents: Pius and Ethel Woodenlegs Shoulderblade; her brothers and sisters: Carl, Francis, Wendelle, Thomas, Bernadine, Claudia, Al, and Carrie; grandchildren: Vince, Ashton, Tana, Russell, Norene, Danielle, Lance, Vance, Frankie Jo and Zion. Surviving family includes her children: Raymond Jr, Calvin Sr, Shirley (Dan), Annette Standing Water, Esther Brady, Irene Flying, Serena (Wayne) Wetherelt and Larry Sioux. Nieces and nephews: Donald (Ruth), Mary and Marceline Shoulderblade, Wilma Two Moons and the children of Bernadine Fisher. Other relatives include: Shoulderblade, Woodenlegs, Seminole, Spotted Wolf, Calls First and the families of the late Edith Birdinground and Mary Bright Wings. Melbert J. Eaglefeathers (Moke) Moke Eaglefeathers came into this world on Highway 212 on May 11, 1953 to Milton and Mamie Eaglefeathers. Moke’s Indian name was Ve’keseheveho, “Bird Chief” and is a descendant of Chief Dull Knife. Moke has a rich history in a long line of Chiefs. Moke passed away peacefully at his home in Butte on May 31, 2016. Growing up in Busby, Moke attended the Busby Boarding School. His basketball legacy started in High School as a Busby Eagle where he later was penned in a news article as “the Clown Prince of basketball”. Although making it to State all four years of his high school career, during his Junior year the Busby Eagles traveled to the State Tournament – winning the State Championship in 1971, Busby, 65, Saco, 64. Moke attended the University of Nebraska for three years leaving to play semi-pro. In 1977, Moke met Sis Sargent of Minnesota and they shared a life together for 13 years. From their union, two beautiful boys were born, Mychal James Eaglefeathers (Helen) and Moke Eaglefeathers (Erin). During these years, he worked at the Colstrip Power Plant. As a young man, he struggled with his addictions, but with his father’s advice and his love for his boys, he overcame these obstacles. In addition, the traditional beliefs of his people, which he held in his heart, helped him win this battle as well. He met Carol McGlynn at the Busby school, where she was a teacher, and they were married in 1995 until the present. Moke truly believed that his dad, the late Milton Eaglefeathers, sent her to him to save his life. Moke expressed to family by Carol giving him the ultimatum: leaving with her back to Butte or staying behind and possibly returning to his old life style, was the single biggest life changing event for him. This ultimately led him to the life he loved so much. Before his passing, Moke informed Mychal and Lil Moke to listen to her and do what she wants. He truly loved her with his whole heart. He began his career at the North American Indian Alliance (NAIA) when he moved to Butte. He started as the Youth Director and eventually became the Executive Director until his death. During his years at the NAIA, he was elected as President of the National Urban Organization, NCUIH. He traveled extensively and addressed both the Senate and Congress on Tribal and Urban health issues. He won many awards for his work for the urban council, one being the Falcon Award for his ability to work with the traditional tribes and the urban natives. One of his favorite events with the NAIA was their September Pow Wow and he was always proud and grateful for the teamwork of the NAIA in creating a positive and inspiring gathering. The morning of February 2, 2016, the last of the ‘BAR NONE’ cowboys saddled up for the last time and headed for the big corral in the sky! Our best friend has joined our mom and relatives as he told his children he was ready. Our beloved Herbert was born on November 9, 1934 in Lame Deer, MT, son of Annie Red Cherries and adopted father Frank Bearchum, Sr. He was later raised by his grandmother, Nancy Divesbackwards and Charlie and Sarah Yellowfox and gained many brothers and sisters. Happy Herb graduated from St. Labre in 1954 where he excelled in track and basketball. Education was very important to him as he went on to school at Bacone Jr. College and learned the trade of a Civil Engineer and was a member of the track and field team. Upon returning from school, he went to work for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Billings, MT. To make ends meet, he worked at a local hospital as an intern. He worked on area ranches and broke horses. At this time, he met and married Violet Yellowrobe and from this union three children were born, Debra, Byron, and Candace. All have preceded him in death and are now awaiting his arrival. Returning to the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, Happy Herb made his home in Ashland, MT and went to work at the Colstrip power plant until retirement. He now joins his brother, Kenneth Beartusk, with whom he announced with at the Northern Cheyenne 4th of July Pow-wow in the early years. He was one of the original committee member s who founded the Ashland Labor Day Pow-wow He had a strong belief in our traditional ways of prayer and our sacred covenants. He was a member of the Kit Fox Society as the ‘Camp Crier’ and ‘Doorman’ and also performed call back and naming ceremonies. He also loved traveling to Bear Butte to pray for good blessings for his family and relatives, he fasted there four times, and instructed relatives who also fasted. Many modern Cheyenne Warriors find themselves still facing battles but now they fight on different battlefields. The courage it requires is the same as years ago. On January 22, 2016 Leo Francis Spang lost his battle for his life through the pain of diabetes and heart disease. The hardest part for him was enduring it without his partner, his beautiful wife, Maxine, who fought her own battle and went on to be where he has now gone. Leo was born on our homeland, Lame Deer, MT, on May 13, 1946, the youngest son of six amazing sons of Jennie (Limberhand) and Wilfred Spang. Leo was a kind, respectful, loving, generous man, and he also had a sense of humor. He was taught at an early age the value of hard work and the joy of exploring the beautiful reservation, and learning the Cheyenne language left to us by our ancestors. One of the happiest days of his life was August 1, 1970, when he joined his life to Maxine Maxelina Guavera and for 43 years they began their life on Muddy Creek together, building a family ranch. Although most of his adult life he spent working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs at a job where he eventually came to know every part of our beautiful reservation, his main joy was on his ranch raising, breeding, and training horses. He was known for training the larger cross breeds, Clydesdales, Shires, Percherons etc. and they pulled his wagons that showed up at major events on the reservation such as parades, giving rides for elders on special occasions, and they were especially requested for funerals, to take people to their final resting place – and he will have this honor himself followed by many to honor this outstanding horseman. He enjoyed training young men to break young colt horses. He and his brothers, children and grandchildren knew him as an expert hunter (mostly elk and deer) providing food for the table in this way. He learned from his father and each year hunting season was a time the family looked forward to. It was a source of stories that were added to each year. Leo trained grey hounds/Scottish deer hound dogs and loved to use them in chasing coyotes. He also loved to trap. He was a legendary figure in southeastern Montana in the area of baseball and of soft ball. He was versatile in just about every area and set records in his ability to knock them out of the field. A power hitter, he earned the name of “The Big Hurt.” In one of the fields in Colstrip he set the record for the most home runs. He was instrumental in founding the outstanding baseball team, “Redfeather.” His horses and wagons went on the trail with Cheyenne Trail riders, a business he has been a part of for the 25 years it has existed. Visitors from every continent and many islands of the world rode with him and learned about the history, culture and especially ethnobotany of our reservation. He also rode horseback with them and camped with them. Cheyenne Trail riders will never be the same without him. Condolences have come in from Germany, Scotland, France, and across the United States. Leo is survived by his children Evone Spang (C. Robert Yellowfox, III); JoHanna Spang; and Artie Spang. Grandchildren: Shaydel Alissa Spang, Sage Francis Spang, Trevor Wiley Spang, and Leo Clay Yellowfox and one great grandchild, Sage Spang Jr., son of Sage Spang and Jeniqua J. Sequi. Four Brothers; Norman (Clarice) Spang of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Alonzo (Clarice) Spang of Billings, James (Aladine) Spang of Muddy Creek, Zane (Sandy) Spang of Ashland. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jennie Limberhand and Wilfred Spang. Brother, Lawrence Spang, and his wife Maxine Guavera. His relatives include Harris, Limpy, Walks Along, Limberhand, Atwood, Whitewolf, Elk Shoulder, Bixby, Whiteman, One Bear, Bear Tusk, Azune, Daniels, Robenson, White Dirt, Wolf Chief, White Shirt, Poitra, Guavera, Killsnight, Threefingers, Lamebear.
