Various Agendas From Tribal Council Meetings

Several Tribal Council Members have purposely abstained from participating in Tribal Council Meetings.

All Tribal business is at a stand-still; no minutes from previous meetings could be approved.  We are able to provide agendas. Please contact your tribal councilman for further details.  According to three council members, Matthew Two Moons, Charles Yellow Fox, and Aljo Strange Owl, they did not want to pursue any new business “until the new council members are sworn in.”  The abstentions of these council members is not in accordance with any codes, laws, by-laws, or the constitution of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe.

Federal Budget Cuts In Education for 2008

Norma Bixby

The United States President’s Budget has been released for Fiscal Year 2008.  Once again education is receiving some drastic reduction and the elimination of some programs.  Slated for the chopping block is Higher Education and Johnson O’Malley.  Impact Aid will be level funded and Construction funding for schools will be reduced.   What can you do?  Write our Montana Congressmen and let them know how these cuts will affect you.  The most important action of all is to Vote on November 7, 2006.  We need to get people elected who care about education and will fight to keep education funding for American Indians.  Remember to bring your ID so that you can vote.

H.R. 4766: American Languages Preservation Act

Norma Bixby

Write Senator Max Baucus and Senator Conrad Burns to support H.R. 4766 when they return from their election break.  This is a bill to support Native American languages.  The act is cited as the “Esther Martinez Native American Languages Preservation Act of 2006.”  It is a Congressional Act that will ensure the survival and continuing vitality of Native American Languages by providing immersion schools, teacher training and development of materials, such as books, audio and visual tools    The bill also authorizes for appropriations to fund language immersion school programs.

Text Box: Cheyenne Youth Pledge to Tobacco

I PLEDGE – To use tobacco in a good way, as Ma’heo’e originally intended, or NOT to use it at all, out of respect.
I PLEDGE – To be respectful in my handling of tobacco.
I PLEDGE – To use tobacco in my prayers according to the traditional Cheyenne teachings that I have learned and through my spiritual understanding.
I PLEDGE – To share my knowledge and understanding with others in a good way in order to spread the “traditional Cheyenne tobacco” message, and to teach the younger generations.
I PLEDGE – To respect my body as it is a gift from Ma’heo’e, the same body as Sweet Medicine or the same body as Buffalo Hat Woman.
I PLEDGE – To do my part and keep tobacco Sacred.
