Sunday night Grand Entry in White River (Busby), Montana, the final night of the Third Annual White River Cheyenne Days.  The traditional powwow was a major event among horse races, a horseshoe tournament, victory dancing, gourd dancing, and traditional giveaways. Horseracing and horseshoe tournament results will be in the next issue of Tribal Report.

This past year has been difficult for the Northern Cheyenne people.  There have been a lot of deaths in every community.  The Onehaa’e (War Dancers) Society has always followed proper protocol before the beginning of any traditional celebration.  This year, as in years before, they were selected by the White River Cheyenne Days Coordinators to oversee the doings at Busby this past weekend.  They conducted the proper ceremonies to ensure the celebration went smoothly, including the much needed call back.

The 3rd Annual White River Cheyenne Days Celebration was one of the best since it first began.  There was a good turn out for both nights of victory dancing and war dancing.  The celebration centers on the Cheyenne and Lakota victories at the Rosebud and Little Bighorn Battles.  On Saturday, June 24, there was a 5K run and 1 mile walk commemorating the Battle Where the Girl Saved Her Brother.  There was also a horseshoe tournament and an endurance horserace. On Sunday, June 25, there were horse races at the Busby Downs. Tournament and race results will be posted in the next issue of Tribal Report.

Each night was capped with traditional singing and dancing.  All drums and dancers were paid, however there were two dance specials: a Women’s Cheyenne Traditional Special in Memorial of Gladys Old Mouse, sponsored by Marie Littlewolf & Adeline Fox; and a Teen Boy’s Cheyenne Traditional Special in recognition of today’s Northern Cheyenne young warriors, sponsored by Leo Killsback.  There was also a traditional buffalo feast on Sunday night.

The event was free of charge and open to the public.  All vendor space was free and free camping space was available.  Coordinators for this year’s White River Cheyenne Days were Mark Roundstone, Norma Gourneau, Sharelene Evans, and Dion Killsback.  Next year’s celebration will offer more events including a basketball tournament and a mountain bike race.

The White River community and people are glad to have a traditional celebration where families and neighbors can come together and have a good time.  The White River community is always proud to host an event that honors those brave warriors who fought in battles not too far from our hometown.
